Out of the Box

Andrew and Julie have a young growing family. They wanted their 1920’s Westmere bungalow to be renovated and extended, to have a good mix of individual and shared spaces, and a great outdoor area with a pool and landscaped garden.

The design of this renovation meshes the differences in architecture of nearly a century, by connecting the openness and sharp lines with the cosy homeliness and detailing of a bungalow.

The scope of the work presented a few challenges as with tight sites in Auckland, excavation right on the boundary line requiring support to protect the neighbours property. Sometimes we have to help our suppliers achieve the architectural detailing, in this case MLB had to convince and demonstrate to the window company that the detailing the architect had designed for their high windows was even possible! These are the type of challenges that make a job for us.

As well as landscaping and building a new deck, we renovated the entire interior of the house, including moving the kitchen into the extension and building two new bathrooms.

The process was fantastic. We loved working with Andrew, Julie and their architect to create a really special family home with clever use of space. Their house suits them so well, and it’s a lovely joining of the old with the new. With their new deck, pool and landscaped garden, they also enjoy a more outdoor lifestyle.

Take a look at Andrew and Julie’s Westmere home.
