He aha te mea nui o te ao. He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata.
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.
Our number one value as a business is ‘People Matter’, this is the substance behind ‘Enjoy building your home!’. The people we have on our team and the contractors we engage align to this value which results in both our team and our clients feeling valued and respected throughout the build.

Murray Long – Director
As director of MLB, Murray’s role is more than simply being the boss or solving problems — but also being the culture-setter. Learning how to handle those responsibilities well doesn’t happen overnight. In Murray’s case it didn’t have to, he began the company in 1996, so you might say the culture has grown around him. It’s the thing Murray is most proud of in MLB — the team culture and their desire to do the best possible work.
At the heart of this culture is the passion to build outstanding houses for clients who appreciate that level of detail. Being part of seeing designs unfold over the months of a build and seeing people’s eyes light up as they walk into a new space, or see some detail that has just been finished, or welcoming a family into their new home is something you can’t describe and what drives Murray to lead this team.
Murray’s dream home is a retreat away from the crowds with his family, one that looks out over the coast. But his favourite house among those built by his company is, no surprise, his own family home. ‘You get to live in what you have created,’ Murray says.
Stephanie Collingwood – Project Coordinator
When Steph says the thing she is most proud of is the team she works with and the sense of humour they share, you believe her. No one chats with Steph for very long before her humour makes an appearance.
Having worked alongside Murray for the better part of 10 years, Steph has an in depth knowledge of the building process along with the ability to provide input into the projects and knows when things aren’t up to the MLB standard. From liaising with new & existing clients, to scheduling our team of builders & subcontractors, to running the office, Steph is an integral part of the team that keeps the business running smoothly.
Clearly someone who also loves her family and animals, Steph shares her home with hubby, Frank, three teenagers, one “super cute dog” and “maybe seven cats”. One day Steph dreams of “completing a six month back country trek in Italy, eating pasta and drinking red wine.”
Nick Jones – Foreman
Foreman Nick Jones goes straight to the point when asked what he is most proud of at Murray Long Builders: the team culture, he says (a common response throughout the team, which says a lot). But also team development, says Nick, and team safety. Much of that is because of the excellent work Nick and others have achieved at MLB. If the team is safe, clients get the best possible work.
“Opportunities here are endless,” Nick says.
When asked about his dream alternative career, interestingly Nick says marine biologist — which would seem a far cry from what he is doing. But apparently not so different; because it’s the sustainability aspect that would interest him. And even when it comes to building, sustainability is something that fires Nick’s imagination.
His ultimate inspiration, however, is his partner Sarah (“Don’t tell her,” he says — erm, too late Nick).
Perhaps that’s why his dream holiday is something so simple and yet so cosy as a self-contained van “with no plan”.
Daniel Hutton – Foreman
You can’t help when and where your core passion emerges, and for Dan his lifelong desire to be a builder didn’t break out until he was 37 years old — by which time he had a family. Not the ideal time of life to jump into a brand new career like building. But for Dan, who was in telecommunications before he made the switch, it wasn’t about how difficult the transition was — it was about a career that quickly became both personally and professionally rewarding.
Dan joined Murray Long Builders in 2018 to complete his apprenticeship, and has since moved into a foreman role.
He says he’s enjoyed all the projects he’s worked on so far.
“I feel fortunate to work with a team of builders who not only have a high standard of their craft, but also are a genuinely good group of guys,” Dan says.
That also includes the genuine relationships the team is able to build with clients — producing results Dan can be proud of, and which always leaves the client “stoked”.
Allan MacLachlan and Derryl Hayman
“We highly recommend Murray Long and his team.
They took the architect’s plans for extensive changes to our 100 year old villa, made some suggestions for improvements, and went ahead and created a reality that was better than we had hoped for.
We found Murray and his team knowledgeable (particularly given the age and character of our house), always approachable and helpful, and very professional. When the unexpected happened - as does with old homes - his team was quick to identify reasonable solutions and their impacts.
They finished the job on schedule and at a fair price.
We enjoyed what is normally a very stressful experience and would work with them again anytime.”
Stu and Jan — Kingsland
“I have used Murray Long Builders on two occasions initially to build my house in Titirangi and more recently to complete an addition to the property.
On both occasions I found them to be extremely professional and helpful.
The work was of an extremely high standard and all work was completed in a timely and efficient manner.
I found Murray and his team to be very helpful in working through the whole building process and they were readily available to answer any queries I had throughout and after the building.
I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone intending to build or renovate a home.”
