Murray Long – Director
As director of MLB, Murray’s role is more than simply being the boss or solving problems — but also being the culture-setter. Learning how to handle those responsibilities well doesn’t happen overnight. In Murray’s case it didn’t have to, he began the company in 1996, so you might say the culture has grown around him. It’s the thing Murray is most proud of in MLB — the team culture and their desire to do the best possible work.
At the heart of this culture is the passion to build outstanding houses for clients who appreciate that level of detail. Being part of seeing designs unfold over the months of a build and seeing people’s eyes light up as they walk into a new space, or see some detail that has just been finished, or welcoming a family into their new home is something you can’t describe and what drives Murray to lead this team.
Murray’s dream home is a retreat away from the crowds with his family, one that looks out over the coast. But his favourite house among those built by his company is, no surprise, his own family home. ‘You get to live in what you have created,’ Murray says.
Anton Johansson – Foreman
Foreman Anton Johansson finds freedom in simplicity. A perfect day for him is spent fishing on a coastal spot, or walking through the temperate rainforest. An afternoon in the sauna fires his imagination and cultivates a relaxed state. Teamwork, to Anton, is about shared passion and a drive towards perfection – a job well done. “Hard work pays off” and “discipline equals freedom” both play a vital part in living up to his dreams.
His dream is to build a home out of recycled materials surrounded by native trees he has grown and propogated from the seeds collected on countless journeys. What he’s most famous for at Murray Long Builders is his choice of radio station and bringing classic country music to the building site.
Nick Jones – Foreman
Foreman Nick Jones goes straight to the point when asked what he is most proud of at Murray Long Builders: the team culture, he says (a common response throughout the team, which says a lot). But also team development, says Nick, and team safety. Much of that is because of the excellent work Nick and others have achieved at MLB. If the team is safe, clients get the best possible work.
“Opportunities here are endless,” Nick says.
When asked about his dream alternative career, interestingly Nick says marine biologist — which would seem a far cry from what he is doing. But apparently not so different; because it’s the sustainability aspect that would interest him. And even when it comes to building, sustainability is something that fires Nick’s imagination.
Perhaps that’s why his dream holiday is something so simple and yet so cosy as a self-contained van “with no plan”.
